One of the most-watched early access launches of the year is officially underway. Subnautica 2 entered early access on May 14, with developer Unknown Worlds promising that the follow-up to 2018's breakout survival hit will grow the way the original did: in public, with the community steering.
The headline feature answers eight years of the same request: Subnautica 2 introduces four-player co-op for the first time in series history. The existential terror of being alone on an alien ocean planet — the thing that arguably made the first game legendary — is now optionally a shared experience. How well the game's dread survives having three friends cracking jokes in voice chat will be the community debate of the season.
The setting itself is entirely new: a fresh alien ocean world built from scratch, with Unknown Worlds promising larger environments, new creatures, more advanced base building and expanded exploration mechanics over the first game. This is not a rehash of 4546B — the studio explicitly wanted a new planet so that even veterans lose their bearings.
Early access means expectations management, of course. The original Subnautica spent years in early access becoming great, and Unknown Worlds has said this sequel will follow the same shape: frequent updates, community feedback loops, and content arriving in waves. If you need a finished product, wait. If you want to watch (and influence) one of survival gaming's biggest sequels taking form, the water's already warm.
The verdict from day one is simply that the pipeline works. Servers held, whale-sized things were glimpsed in the dark, and the group-screaming has already started. Some traditions just needed company.
