The most fan-requested setting in racing game history is finally real. Forza Horizon 6 launched May 19 on Xbox Series X|S and PC, and it didn't just check the "Japan" box — Playground Games delivered what it's calling the biggest map the series has ever featured, built around the real Kantō region.
The numbers alone deserve their own paragraph. 550 cars at launch. Expanded multiplayer systems. Ranked progression for the first time in the series. A customizable player estate for when you're off the road — the Horizon fantasy now includes interior decorating. And an unlockable area called Legend Island, which the trailers tease with what appears to be a giant robot. Playground has declined to explain the robot. We choose to respect the mystery.
The obsessive detail work is there too — press coverage ahead of launch highlighted things like reworked steering wheel animations and acoustically modeled sound environments, the kind of granular craft that separates a great driving game from a checklist. Early impressions have the racing itself singing as much as the scenery.
The one asterisk is platform timing. Forza Horizon 6 is confirmed for PlayStation 5, but that version won't arrive until later in the year — a genuine surprise given how massively its predecessor performed on Sony's machine. Forza Horizon 5 was the biggest launch in Xbox Game Studios history, with over 10 million players in its first week, and a significant chunk of that eventual audience came from its belated PS5 release. Whether that changes Microsoft's plans before year-end is one of the more quietly fascinating business stories of 2026.
For now: the Horizon Festival has gone to Japan, and it's every bit the spectacle promised. Welcome to Kantō. Mind the robot.
