Every Geoff Keighley showcase has one announcement that blindsides everyone — no leaks, no hints, no marketing run-up — and Summer Game Fest 2026's was an absolute haymaker: Guild Wars 3 is officially in development at ArenaNet, coming to PlayStation 5 and PC.
Let the number sit for a moment: Guild Wars 2 launched in 2012. Fourteen years of living inside one MMO — of expansions, Living World seasons, engine patches and community schisms — ends with an actual sequel, the thing the franchise's fans had quietly stopped daring to ask for. Community reaction said everything: in post-show polls and threads, GW3 rivaled Final Fantasy VII Revelation for total buzz — and unlike FF7, precisely nobody had predicted it.
The PlayStation 5 announcement is the bigger strategic shock. ArenaNet's MMO lineage is pure PC heritage, so console availability on day one signals a ground-up rethink: interfaces, combat targeting, and economies all being built for your hands and your sofa simultaneously. How an MMO that has always lived in keyboard muscle memory translates to a controller is the single most interesting technical question it raises.
Beyond that, the transparency bank is empty — no date, no gameplay, no feature list. All we have is the confirmation that ArenaNet is building a true successor rather than a fifth expansion, and enough optimism, after years of the studio operating quietly, that this generation of MMOs will get its own round.
Tyria has survived everything from elder dragons to business cycles. Now it gets a sequel. The MMO wars of the next few years just became genuinely interesting.
