Fumito Ueda Returns With Gen Atlas, a Sci-Fi Shooter With Kaiju Battles

Summer Game Fest found time between the blockbusters for one of its most quietly surreal moments: Fumito Ueda — the auteur behind Ico, Shadow of the Colossus and The Last Guardian — was recognized on stage by Geoff Keighley before the show pivoted to his studio's new project. It's called Gen Atlas, and here's the sentence of the night: it's a sci-fi shooter with kaiju battles.

Read that again. The director whose entire legacy is quiet minimalism — vast empty palaces, a boy holding a girl's hand, a lonely horse, guilt at killing giants — is now making a game where you shoot at enormous monsters. And yet, underneath the whiplash, it might not actually be that alien to him: giant creatures and respectful dread have always been his material. Shadow of the Colossus made you feel monstrous for killing something extraordinary. Maybe Gen Atlas explores what it's like when the giants shoot back.

Details beyond the trailer remain thin — it's early by the look of it, with no date and no platform commitments yet. Ueda's genDESIGN studio has spent the better part of a decade building toward this reveal after The Last Guardian's famously protracted birth, so "whenever it's ready" is the realistic calendar.

Announcement-night verdicts on the tonal shift have been predictably split between "Ueda earned the right to make anything" and "but have you seen Shadow of the Colossus". Whatever your camp, a genuinely new game from this director — any genre, any weapons — is an event the medium doesn't get often.

Between this, Alien: Isolation 2 and the rest, SGF 2026's theme might just be: trusted auteurs, doing their second-weirdest thing.
