Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio looked at its sprawling multigenerational crime epic and decided the only thing missing was impossible to clear in 2025. The SGF trailer for Stranger Than Heaven revealed the late Tupac Shakur as a character in the game — an appearance reportedly given the blessing of Snoop Dogg himself — and finally dated the project: January 15, 2027.
The trailer showcased the game's core conceit at scale: five distinct playable eras of a Japanese port city's underworld, from early 20th-century roughs to neon-lit modernity. (Formerly known as Project Century, this is RGG Studio's first major new property beyond the Like a Dragon / Yakuza lineage in a decade — the studio using everything it learned about period criminal drama.)
The Tupac reveal is, obviously, the thing the entire internet focused on, because of course it is. How a legendary American rapper functions inside an RGG narrative is a question the trailer declined to answer — but the studio's history with celebrity casting (Danny Trejo, Edgar Wright's whole Kiryu fanboy era, and countless Japanese stars) means it's not as left-field as the initial head-tilt suggests. RGG doesn't do cameos; it commits.
January 15, 2027 also plants the game in what's politely called post-GTA territory — the first quarter of 2027 is already shaping up to be jammed with everything that chose to flee November 2026's blast radius. RGG is either very confident or very oblivious, and historically it hasn't needed to care.
Five eras. One city. Tupac. It's called Stranger Than Heaven, and at this point the studio had better keep outstranging itself — it's the entire brand.
