Halo: Campaign Evolved Deploys July 28 — on PlayStation Too

The sentence nobody ever expected to read arrived during the Xbox Games Showcase: the next Halo game releases later this month, and you can play it on a PlayStation 5. Halo: Campaign Evolved — Halo Studios' ground-up remake of the original Combat Evolved campaign — releases July 28 on Xbox Series X|S, PC and PS5.

The remaster approach is ambitious without being reinventive: the original campaign rebuilt to current-gen standards, with three all-new missions added on top. Multiplayer is not the pitch — this is explicitly the campaign as a museum-quality experience, preserved and extended, with the sandbox that made a FPS genre. Early access begins July 23 for players who pre-order, and it's day one on Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass, with pre-orders open across Xbox, Steam and — this is now a normal sentence — the PlayStation Store.

Twenty-five years of Sony-messaging treating Halo as the mountain Microsoft would never move, and this is how it ends: the mountain being Fed-Exed to your rival's storefront. It simultaneously says everything about Xbox's new case-by-case multiplatform logic (campaign fantasy goes everywhere!) and nothing about what happens next (Gears stays home?).

Regardless of strategy seminars, the actual content is the news: one of the five most influential campaigns in game history, finally rebuilt from recklessly faithful ground truth. Silent Cartographer at full fidelity, Library at full despair, Warthog run at full nostalgia. July 28 is the day the long march into every-living-room is complete.

The Warthog run is now a PlayStation 5 game. Wild scene.
