GTA 6 Pre-Orders Detonate Every Record in Sight

Grand Theft Auto VI doesn't launch for another five months, and it is already eating the industry's lunch money. Pre-orders for Rockstar's successor to the most profitable entertainment product ever made opened on June 25 — and according to preliminary Newzoo data, they generated roughly $260 million globally in their first week alone.

The analyst projections have detached from any pretense of caution. Newzoo's model, built from the pre-order data, predicts up to 51 million units sold by the end of launch week — generating roughly $5.2 billion in revenue. Piper Sandler has separately estimated over 45 million units on launch day. For scale: Grand Theft Auto V, in 2013, set what was then an unthinkable industry record by selling 11.21 million copies in its first 24 hours. The current GTA VI models are projecting a day one three to four times bigger than the old record.

The February update from Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick stands behind all of it: November 19 is on track, and the marketing campaign is about to begin properly. That structure — vault the pre-orders six months out, roll the trailers in waves, starve the press of specifics until the last responsible minute — is the exact playbook Rockstar ran for both GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2, and both yielded launches that redefined "biggest ever" in consecutive industry generations.

The scale has consequences beyond one game's balance sheet. The reason so much of 2027 — Fable, FF7 Revelation, Persona 4 Revival, Clutch, Stranger Than Heaven — is crowded into the early year is precisely that every sensible publisher fled Q4 2026 rather than compete. One game that isn't even out yet has already reorganized the entire release calendar.

Five months to go. The world isn't ready, and the math says it doesn't matter.
