Everyone's favorite deep-sea sushi impresario is finally getting out of the water. Dave the Diver: In the Jungle, the expansion for Mintrocket's genre-defying phenomenon, launched June 18 on PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Switch — swapping the Blue Hole's diving depths for whole new jungle terrain to explore, and yes, new things to catch and serve with sides.
For the uninitiated: the original 2023 game became one of the decade's great indie word-of-mouth stories by inventing an unhinged genre-splice — underwater spearfishing roguelite by day, sushi restaurant management sim by night, wrapped in increasingly absurdist storylines about sea people, extortion plots and band recruitment. Nobody can describe Dave the Diver in one sentence, which is the entire point.
An expansion that commits to new biome territory (jungle versus ocean) instead of merely more-of-the-same content load is exactly the flex this game needed. Built with the same swagger — trade the regulator for a machete, keep the chaotic composite structure, and find fresh analogues for the "how deep does this go?" diving dread in the canopy.
That Mintrocket (under Nexon) is continuing to treat an independent-feeling game as a long-lived platform rather than a one-and-done is encouraging in its own right. Dave survived content surgery — including balancing updates and a free content roadmap — and came out bigger than ever. The jungle was always next, just nobody dared admit it.
Choose your fighter — speargun or sushi knife. The correct answer is both, as always.
